A big thank you to everyone who took part in Sleep Easy 2013 or supported us in any way! So far we have raised more than £12,000 which will make a vital difference to the lives of vulnerable young people locally.
YMCA Derbyshire’s ‘Sleep Easy’ sponsored sleep-out event at Derbyshire County Cricket Club’s ground on the night of Friday 1st March night has been hailed a resounding success after nearly 70 people slept rough so that others don’t have to.
The Mayor of Derby, Cllr Lisa Higginbottom, and her predecessor, Cllr Les Allen, were among those who braved temperatures as low as 1 degree to sleep out in sleeping bags and cardboard boxes to raise awareness of youth homelessness and funds for YMCA Derbyshire’s vital work. Derby County FC’s Captain Shaun Barker also attended the event in the evening and spread the word via Twitter.
A number of teams took part in the event, including representatives from accountancy firm Cooper Parry, local nursery Derwent Stepping Stones, Lakeside Community Primary School, Safe & Sound Derby, local authority housing advisors and YMCA Derbyshire’s own staff team. So far over £10,000 has been raised in online donations alone – rising to over £12,000 once Gift Aid is taken into account.
Grace Harrison, the event’s principal organiser, said, “We are all delighted by how many people took part and how much has been raised in sponsorship so far. Everyone seemed to enjoy the event, despite the cold, and it was great to receive the support of the Mayor and also Shaun Barker from Derby County FC. There was a really good atmosphere all night and the hot breakfast cobs served in the morning were definitely well deserved and appreciated!
“As well as thanking all those who took part or who helped to organise the event, we would also like to thank the various local companies and organisations who supported it by providing the venue, donating cardboard boxes, supplying food and publicising the cause. It was a great team effort by everyone involved – one which will make a real difference to the lives of vulnerable young people here in Derbyshire.”
YMCA Derbyshire’s Sleep Easy event was one of 22 similar events held at YMCAs up and down the country over the weekend, although all money raised from the event in Derby will go towards local projects to prevent youth homelessness.
