We are offering a free one-day Level 2 Health & Safety course in Derby on 29th May 2013.
We also also offering a free one-day Level 2 Food Safety course on 15th May 2013.
Each course is run at our centre on Forman Street in Derby City centre and lasts from 9.30am – 3.30pm.

What is this programme?
This is a 24-week programme for those aged 16 to 19 run by YMCA Derbyshire’s Learning and Development Service. You will be working towards the City and
Guilds Level 1 Foundation Learning Certificate in Hospitality and Catering.
What’s in it for me?
This programme takes into account the latest approach to food safety, health and
safety legislation and current industry practices. It will provide you with a wide
range of high quality cooking skills and, after completion, you’ll be able to carry
on with further training in catering or hospitality at the next level.
You’ll spend two days a week developing practical skills in a well-equipped and
modern kitchen, and one day a week in personal development and learning
functional skills – including English, maths and information technology.
The units on the programme include an introduction to hospitality and the catering
industry; an introduction to kitchen equipment, preparing and cooking food by
various methods such as boiling, grilling,
steaming, baking, poaching and frying;
food safety in catering; and cold food preparation.

The programme is run three days a week at YMCA Derbyshire’s Campus for
Learning and Development on London Road in Derby and also at Handyside Court
in Alvaston.

What is this programme?
This is a 24-week programme for those aged 16 to 19 run by YMCA Derbyshire’s Learning and Development Service. You will be working towards the City and
Guilds Level 1 Foundation Learning Certificate in Caring for Children. You will also have the opportunity to gain qualifications in Basic First Aid, Food Safety and
Health & Safety.
What’s in it for me?
This programme allows you to gain skills in caring for children and gives you the
foundation to carry on with further training to work with children of all ages. It
also encourages personal development and leads to qualifications that open the
door for you to progress to the next level.
You’ll spend three days a week at our Forman Street centre studying Caring for
Children as well as Personal and Social Development and Functional Skills in
English, Maths and ICT. You will also have the opportunity to take up a work
placement which will develop your employability skills even further.
This programme is structured and planned with your future career plans in mind.
The breadth of knowledge you will acquire, the City and Guilds qualification and
the work placement will all give you a great springboard to pursue your chosen
path.

What is this programme?
This is a full-time programme for young people aged 16-18 and includes language support in all classes.
It aims to develop the language skills of young people who don’t have English as a first language as well as give them recognised City and Guilds qualifications in:
• Employability Skills
• Vocational knowledge
• English
• Maths
• ICT
All learners will also have the opportunity to gain work experience to further enhance their employment opportunities

The programme starts on 1st July 2013 at our centre on Forman Street in Derby city centre.

What is this programme?
This programme is for those aged 14 to 18 who need extra help to get into an apprenticeship or paid employment.
What does the programme cover?
You will receive support in developing employability skills and also pre-apprenticeship
training. One day a week will be devoted to theory, with the rest
of the time spent developing practical skills.
You will receive training on topics including CV writing, interview techniques, personal development, rights & responsibilities in the workplace, presentation skills, team building, health & safety, searching for jobs and apprenticeships and functional skills if required. You will also benefit from one-to-one career information and support.
Practical elements of the programme could include vocational courses in Childcare,
Catering and Health & Social Care with a view to obtaining a City & Guilds Award.
There may also be the opportunity for placements with local employers as well as
one-day short courses in Food Safety, COSHH and Health & Safety at Levels
1 and 2.
What else should I know?
We often run a ‘taster’ session every four weeks and, after attending this, you can
decide whether Ignite is right for you, or whether a Foundation Learning programme
would be more suitable. You can enrol up to one day before the programme's
start
date. All travel expenses will be reimbursed while you attend the programme.

Who is this programme for?
This programme may be for you if you’re aged 19 plus and in receipt of benefits
and requiring a level one programme of study. (Restrictions may apply.)
What’s in it for me?
You’ll be working towards a NOCN-accredited Progression Award or
Certificate at level one.
Throughout the programme you will be given the opportunity to develop skills attractive to employers – including in team work, communication skills and staying healthy. You will also benefit from access to a computer suite to help you with tasks required for the Employment Module in preparation for work such as job searching, writing your CV, research and preparing for recruitment interviews.
You will also receive help with tasks required for the Independent Living
Module in preparation for having your own tenancy, including developing
money management skills and accessing online health information.
You will be given opportunity to complete project work and activities demonstrating
your ability to plan and carry out individual responsibilities. What is more, you will
receive a Derby City Recreational Pass giving you access to free activities for you
to keep on completion of the programme.
What does it involve?
The programme requires you to attend a guidance session prior to being offered a
start in order to assess your suitability and to identify your individual learning aims.
During the short programme of between four and 10 weeks you’ll spend three days
a week at our modern and well-equipped Campus for Learning and Development
where you will take part in informal style workshops and attend weekly tutorial
sessions. This will allow you to build up a portfolio of evidence, gain skills relevant
to employment or independent living and demonstrate your skills practically.
The format of the programme also encourages progression and personal
development and leads to an accreditation that can open the door for you to
progress immediately to the Certificate.
What will I learn?
The Programme has two modules, one focused on gaining employment and
one focused on moving into independent living.
Units you will study across both modules may include:
• Using Teamwork Skills
• Participating in Leisure Activities
• Developing Group and Teamwork Communication Skills
• Developing Skills for Independent Life
• Developing Own Interpersonal Skills
Units you may also study if you take the employability module include:
• Preparation for Work
• Preparing for a Recruitment Interview
Units you may also study if you take the independent living module include:
• Healthy Living
• Personal Budgeting and Money Management
• Independent Shopping for Household Items
Learners entered for the Progression Award will focus on one of the two
modules offered and be required to complete two units. Those demonstrating
commitment and the ability to progress may be offered a place on the Certificate
and will be required to complete both modules and seven units in total. These
units will be identified in individual learning plans, depending on the basis for
referral to the programme and following discussion in tutorial sessions.

This programme is structured with regular start dates and planned with your
future work and independent living plans in mind. The range of knowledge and
experiences you will acquire, the National Open College Network (NOCN)
Accreditation and Progression Award/Certificate Qualification will all give you a
great springboard to pursue your chosen path.

Which programmes do we offer?
We offer PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) as well as
the Introduction to Trainer Skills programme and the Assessors’ Award (TAQA).
How is the PTLLS programme taught?
The programme leads to the City & Guilds PTLLS qualification and lasts for
12 weeks. It is runj on Thursday evenings in the modern and comfortable surroundings of The Campus for Learning and Development in Derby.
The programme provides the ideal springboard into further training to become a qualified teacher. So, if you would like to be able to share your skills and knowledge with young people and adults but have not yet completed your PTLLS qualification, contact us today!

You will gain real retail work experience while studying for an Entry Level 3 or
Level 1
City & Guilds qualification in Retail Knowledge. On top of this, you will receive training in literacy and numeracy as well as full support to get a paid job.
