A warm welcome to YMCA Derbyshire

You are very welcome to YMCA Derbyshire. We have been at the heart of the community in Derbyshire for 165 years. While the scope of our work has changed considerably over the years, our vision for holistic development in body, mind and spirit and our mission to break down barriers to achievement and help local people to fulfil their potential have remained constant.

Today YMCA Derbyshire is an independent Christian charity committed to helping people at times of need, regardless of their gender, race, ability or faith. We provide supported housing for vulnerable and homeless people aged 16 to 64, innovative learning and development programmes, various schemes for children and their families and other projects aimed at achieving sustainable community development. We are affiliated to the national and international YMCA movement, and our values to protect, trust, hope and persevere underpin all of our services across the county.

Serving the people of Derbyshire continuously for 165 years
George Williams
Derby YMCA was founded in 1847 and has been serving the local community ever since.

The YMCA movement's founder, George Williams, even visited us in 1892 to open a new centre. As the door was ceremonially opened, Mr Williams expressed his “fervent hope” that it would “prove a door to hope, happiness and success”.

Since then we have continued to respond dynamically to the real and changing needs of the communities we serve, while remaining true to our unchanging values and vision.
