Residential members complete epic bike ride
A group of intrepid YMCA Derbyshire residents have completed a gruelling 140-mile Coast-to-Coast bike ride in just two and a half days. The sponsored ride from Whitehaven in Cumbria to Millennium Bridge in Newcastle was in aid of Aid International and United Christian Broadcasting. The four residents of YMCA Derbyshire’s Campus for Learning and Development in Wilmorton, and Lead Support Worker Marc Stevens, cycled 50 miles each day and climbed to altitudes of 2000 feet during the challenge. When descending they reached speeds of up to 50 mph. When the riders reached Newcastle, they were met with a Champagne reception and a feeling of justifiable pride. They described it as the hardest challenge they had ever undertaken, but also a great experience that they would definitely do again. In total, 26 riders took part in the sponsored ride, ranging in ages from 14 to 83. The YMCA residents raised about £250. Marc Stevens, YMCA Derbyshire’s Lead Support Worker for Activities, said: “A great time was had by all and everyone felt a tremendous sense of achievement at the end of the ride. The residents had received training from LA Fitness and Cycle Derby. Furthermore, the Derbyshire Constabulary together and Cycle Derby kindly donated four bicycles for the challenge, so it was a great exercise in working with the community. “Preparing for this challenge and seeing it through to a successful conclusion was an important experience for our residents, and they’ve done both the YMCA and Derby proud.”
