Learning Mentor Service
Louise Nevin has been working as a Learning Mentor at four schools within Derby: Ravensdale Infant School, Ravensdale Junior School, Mickleover Primary School and Silverhill Primary School. Her role is to help individual pupils overcome barriers to learning both within and outside school. She supports those pupils who are at risk of underachieving, and assesses why pupils are experiencing barriers to learning. As a role model, guide and advisor, she works to help all pupils achieve their full potential.
Louise's perspective
As an outreach worker I’m part of the Children’s and Young People’s Services team, employed as a Learning Mentor in four schools across the Mickleover area.
My job involves working with individual pupils to overcome barriers to learning, and supporting those who are at risk of under-achieving or disengaging from learning. An important part of being a Learning Mentor is assessing why pupils are experiencing these barriers. This could include a range of factors such as behaviour, bereavement, difficulties at home, low self-esteem, etc.
By delivering the Learning Mentor programme and building up a reputation for high quality delivery, it is hoped that we might be able to extend the service into new schools and localities.
It is an enjoyable and challenging job with no two days ever the same. I have seen children grow in confidence and I find it rewarding to know that I’m contributing to unlocking their full potential.
