By train
Derby Railway Station is served by three train companies: East Midlands Trains, CrossCountry and Northern Rail. As such it is ideally located at the heart of the national railway network. The Campus is a mile's walk from the railway station – simply exit through the main ticket hall and walk straight on along Midland Road to a T-junction with London Road, then turn left along London Road and find us on the right after about a mile. Alternatively, Arriva bus routes 41, 44 and 45 go directly from the station to the Campus (ask for the bus stop for Ascot Drive - the current single fare is £1.70) as does the SkyBus towards East Midlands Airport.
By car from the south:
Leave the M1 at Junction 24. Take the A50 and then the A6 into Derby. Turn south on to the A5111 ring road briefly before re-joining the A6 into Alvaston and then and into Wilmorton until you arrive at a roundabout with a Dunelm Mill store on the corner. Continue straight on (on the A5194 towards Derby City Centre) and The Campus is directly on your left.
By car from the north:
Leave the M1 at Junction 28. Take the A38 towards Derby, veering left onto the A61 into Derby city centre. Follow signs for the city centre and then onto the inner ring road. Continue until you arrive at a roundabout with the Westfield Shopping Centre on your right. Turn left onto London Road (A5194) with the London Road Community Hospital to your right, and continue straight on until you arrive at The Campus on your right.
The idea behind our vision is based on the university campus concept with areas of accommodation, space for communal activities and socialising as well as dedicated areas for vocational training and personal development.
Gillian Sewell, Chief Executive of YMCA Derbyshire, said: “The new Campus building is, quite literally, a dream come true. The initial vision of an integrated facility drawing together residential accommodation and state-of-the-art training facilities has become a reality."
“The opening is the culmination not just of a building project but also of years of research, planning and fundraising. I feel sure that this new facility will give us the ability to make a real difference to the lives of many more young people by giving them the tools they need to flourish as responsible and productive members of the community.
“I am extremely grateful to all those who have worked so hard to complete the Campus building project – from those involved in the original designs to our funders, partner agencies, builders and coordinators. It has been a great team effort and the end result, I am sure, has done us all proud.”
The logo
The graphic element of the logo (the ‘triangle and bird’) represents what we are about. The four colours each represent one of our areas of work (Supported Housing; Learning & Development; Children’s and Young People’s Services; Sustainable Community Development) and the four associated values that underpin all we do (Protect; Trust; Hope; Persevere). They also represent the service user members we serve, while the triangle represents our organisation. The three sides of the triangle symbolise our mission to develop the whole person – body, mind and spirit.
Our service user members come into contact with YMCA Derbyshire and we take them as they are – hence the fact that the lines have rough rather than smooth and polished edges. Our aim is to support them to flourish and fulfil their potential, allowing them to attain freedom and launch themselves into a bright, independent future – represented by the bird.
In short, we take our service user members as they are and, by supporting them to develop in body, mind and spirit, we transform their lives so that they can flourish and attain their potential like a bird who flies free.
