The Campus Café is open to members of the public and serves a selection of delicious snacks, meals and hot and cold drinks. It is partly operated by YMCA Derbyshire's catering and hospitality learner members, giving them invaluable work experience as part of their studies and building their confidence.

Five stars for Campus Café

The Campus Café has been awarded a five star rating after a surprise visit by Derby’s Environmental Health Officers.
Five stars is the highest possible award as part of Derby City Council’s Food Hygiene Star Rating scheme, run in conjunction with the Food Standards Agency. It recognises the Campus Café as a model of best practice in terms of food handling practices and procedures, attitude of the management towards hygiene and food safety, and other important aspects.

Tracie Tunnicliffe, a hospitality tutor at The Campus who helps to run the Café, said: “We were all surprised by the visit of two Environmental Health Officers in December. They arrived before the Café actually opened and stayed there until the busiest time of the day. They started by taking temperatures of food deliveries and also checked the temperatures of the oven, fridge and other kitchen appliances. The staff changing rooms and other facilities were also checked for general cleanliness.

“While we were confident that we’d pass with flying colours, this accolade is certainly very welcome and all the staff and learners deserve a pat on the back. The learners are particularly proud of their achievement, which means we are leaders in the field. The inspectors did not even identify any areas for improvement!”
