A warm welcome to YMCA Derbyshire

You are very welcome to YMCA Derbyshire. We have been at the heart of the community in Derbyshire for 167 years. While the scope of our work has changed considerably over the years, our vision for holistic development in body, mind and spirit and our mission to break down barriers to achievement and help local people to fulfil their potential have remained constant.

Today YMCA Derbyshire is an independent Christian charity committed to helping people at times of need, regardless of their gender, race, ability or faith. We provide housing for people facing homelessness, innovative learning and development programmes, various schemes for children and their families and other projects aimed at achieving sustainable community development. We are affiliated to the national and international YMCA movement, and our values to protect, trust, hope and persevere underpin all of our services across the county.

Peter Posner OBECongratulations to Peter Posner OBE!

The Chairman of YMCA Derbyshire's Board of Trustees, Peter Posner OBE, has been elected as the next President of the World Council of YMCAs.

Gillian Sewell, our Chief Executive, said, "I am thrilled at Peter’s richly deserved appointment as President of the World Council of YMCAs. Peter has the YMCA movement in his blood and has worked for it tirelessly over many years. He served as President of the European Alliance of YMCAs with distinction and we have been privileged to have him as our vice-chairman and now chairman at YMCA Derbyshire. I know that Peter cares passionately about the values and ethos of the YMCA and about the vulnerable young people we support, protect and empower. I know that the whole YMCA family in Derbyshire, Europe and across the world will join me in congratulating Peter on this great achievement.”

Serving the people of Derbyshire continuously for 167 years
George Williams
Derby YMCA was founded in 1847 and has been serving the local community ever since.

The YMCA movement's founder, George Williams, even visited us in 1892 to open a new centre. As the door was ceremonially opened, Mr Williams expressed his “fervent hope” that it would “prove a door to hope, happiness and success”.

Since then we have continued to respond dynamically to the real and changing needs of the communities we serve, while remaining true to our unchanging values and vision.
