A warm welcome to YMCA Derbyshire

You are very welcome to YMCA Derbyshire. We are an independent Christian charity committed to helping young people, particularly at times of need, regardless of gender, race, ability or faith. We operate from five centres across Derbyshire: two in Derby and one each in Alfreton, Chesterfield and Ilkeston.

We provide supported housing for vulnerable and homeless people aged 16 to 64, innovative learning and development programmes, various schemes for children in and out of school and other projects aimed at achieving sustainable community development. Founded in 1847, we are affiliated to the national and international YMCA movement, which is now active in over 120 countries with 30 million members.

YMCA National Manifesto 2010YMCA National Manifesto 2010

The YMCA in England prepared a national manifesto ahead of the UK's general election
on 6th May.

Among other things, the manifesto called for the removal of barriers to apprenticeships,
the provision of more support for family mediation, reform of the the housing benefit system
to incentivise work and training, and investment in schemes to encourage more young
people to take part in physical activities. The proposals were aimed at building stronger,
healthier and more resilient young people and communities.

Our Chief Executive, Gillian Sewell, attended the launch of the document in Westminster in January and commented: "Few issues can be as important as giving our young people the support they need to achieve their potential. What we are asking of our elected politicians is a real commitment to invest in young people, and perseverance to see these projects through to completion. All too often MPs promise much before an election and then fail to deliver, but we are calling on all parties to show the vision and courage needed to make a real difference.”
